Beware of phishing attempts following the Equifax data breach! You can protect yourself by following one simple rule: Never give account or card information over the phone to anyone who contacts you.
Opportunists or criminals have already started calling members. We have received reports of members receiving calls from a Nebraska area code with a recorded message pretending to be from “Metro Health Services Federal Credit Union.” The recording tells the member they are“one of the ones affected by the breach,” and the message asks the member to hit a key to speak to a live person.
Unless you purchased something (like credit monitoring) from Equifax, criminals could not have stolen enough information in the breach to counterfeit your credit cards. A typical phishing scam is to contact consumers pretending to be from a financial institution to try to trick people into giving them the rest of the information they need (like the 3 digit CVV code on the back of your card).
If you receive an automated call like this, or if anyone calls you asking for any information about your card or your account, simply hang up. We will never call you to ask for your card number, account number, or the three digit code on the back of your card.
